Home Care and Recovery Tips After A Tooth Extraction

Here are some more home care tips to help lessen any discomfort and aid recovery after a tooth extraction.

1. Bleeding is natural and a required part of the healing process. - Most of the initial bleeding is usually resolved after the first couple of hours following an extraction but patients should expect an "oozing" of blood for about 24 hours. This oozing of blood is not active bleeding but may discolor the saliva pink.

2. You can bite on gauze for 20 minutes to stop the bleeding. If bleeding continues, gently remove the gauze and place another gauze. Continue to apply light pressure.

3. To alleviate pain, apply a cold compress. If you were given medication, take them according to the instructions.

4. You can brush and floss your other teeth but avoid rinsing your mouth vigorously.

5. Smoking can also delay recovery so it is best to be avoided.

6. If you have prolonged bleeding you may try steeping a tea bag and gently biting on it. This is a common home remedy to help stop bleeding.
